Composition

Injectable solution based on :
Phenylbutazone ( as Sodium) ............ 20 g
Benzyl alcohol ........................................ 1 ml
Disodium edetate ................................. 0,004 g
Excipient to ............................................. 100 ml

 

Properties

Phenylbutazone is a powerful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory with antirheumatic, analgesic and anti-pyretic activity. As it belongs to other pyrazole derivatives, it intervenes especially inthe early stages of inflammatory phenomena, against vascular permeability, the resulting oedema and diapedesis. It is recommended in the following affections : arthritis, tendinitis, articular and muscularrheumatisms, congestive processes, hyperthermia, heat strokes, inflammatory complications of trauma or diverse microbial affections.

 

Indications

In sport horses or racehorses and dogs : non-steroidal anti-inflammatory.

 

Administration and dosage

Deep I.M. or slow I.V. administration.
Adult horses : inject, by deep I.M. route, 20 - 30 ml the first day, 20 ml the second day and 10 ml, the following days for 1 - 4 days. I.V. injection of 20 ml can also be employed every day or every 2 days depending on the severity of the case.
Foals : 6 - 10 ml to be repeated 24 or 48 hours later depending on the severity of the case.
Dogs : 1 ml per 15 kg a day, by I.V. or deep I.M. route.

 

Special warnings

Some side effects related to Phenylbutazone have been described in the literature : gastrointestinal ulcers, haemorrhage, nephritis. The incidence of these symptoms is very weak.

 

Amount to be administered


Intravenous injections should be carried out slowly. When using this route of administration avoid withdrawing blood and mixing in the syringe.
Intramuscular injections should be carried out deep in the muscular mass.
In any case, injections should be carried out under strict aseptic conditions.
If necessary carry out a second series of injections one to two weeks later to consolidate therapeutic results. It is however not necessary to increase the prescribed dose or prolong duration of treatment if no improvement is noted after 6 days.
It is recommended not to give repeated injections. It is also advised to reduce the dose-rate for animals suffering from vascular fragility or blood coagulation defects.

 

Contra-indications

Cardiac, hepatic and renal insufficiency.
Do not administer in the animals of which the flesh and/or the products are intended for human consumption.

 

Withdrawal period

Refer to section "Contra-indications".
