Things You Need To Know About Before buying Your Dog House

Dogs are programmed to live in packs, so naturally your pet dog belongs with its pack, that is you and your family and thus the most appropriate place for your dogs to sleep is inside the house with the rest of the pack! Now, that, for various reasons, might be difficult for some households. For such households, getting a Dog House is the right thing to do. If you are planning to get your dog a house of its own, then you should pay attention to :

1-The Size Of The House:

German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers and all other big dogs should have proportionally big houses; whereas the Chihuahuas, the Yorkshires, and other smaller breeds need smaller houses. The dog house should be comfortable and easy to enter and exit, therefore you have to consider your dog’s measurements while selecting the perfect house for your beloved pet. Basically, your dog house needs to be big enough for your dog to enter, stand, lie down and turn around freely. You also must take into account the climate of your area when deciding on the dog house size. The larger the house is, the colder it gets, so larger houses are suitable for warmer climates while more fit houses are better suited for the cold.

2- The Dog House Design:

When you select the design for your dog house you need to consider the roof! Some dog houses have hinged roofs, which allows you to raise the roof during hot and humid weather. This flexibility provides adequate air flow to cool the house as it gives room to fresh or cool air to enter, as well as protection from rain and cold weather when lowered. Asphalt shingles should only be used in case there is an adequate barrier of insulation separating the roof and the house. Many house models come with slanting roofs, ensuring that during rainy days water drains away.

Because it attracts hornets, wasps and other insects and prevents heat retention, You should avoid getting a dog house  with barn-type or peak-style roofs.

Now that you have taken care of the roof, it’s time to pay attention to the floor. You need a thick floor in order to raise the dog house off ground to keep the floor dry, prevent insect infestation and for better temperature control.

3- The Dog House Door:

The dog house front door should be located more to the side rather than in the middle. This will protect your dog against harsh weather and prevent it from getting exposed to direct sunlight.. Some dog house models have removable doors or no doors at all. But we advise against these, as having a door helps to keep your dog house cooler during hot months.

4- Choosing the Dog House Material:

Get a wooden house. While Plastic houses are lighter and  much easier to clean, they are not good for temperature control as they get too cold in winter and too hot in summer.  Wooden houses are a much better choice because wood is a great natural insulator. Some industry analysts say houses made of natural western red cedar wood give dogs the best winter insulation while making them cooler during summer. Red cedar wood oils are also popular repellents against tick, flea and termites, thus preventing insect infestation.

We all want our pets to be safe, healthy and happy. Selecting the best dog house for your dog is important to ensure its satisfaction, wellbeing, and happiness.
